Organizing the logging means that the forest owner organizes himself

  • the preparation of the logging-works,
  • takes care of the timber assortment (logs, pulp, firewood), while logging the growing forest,
  • the hauling of the assortments out of the forest,
  • transporting the assortments from the forest to the buyers of timber,
  • sale of the assortments.

Organizing the logging will probably not be successful in case of owners without the necessary qualifications, as forestry is a very specialized area, requiring expertise. In order to achieve good results, people have to study for many years at colleges and universities, and continuous practice is also very important. Even the advice of specialists may not be enough, as the knowledge acquired during some weeks of training and experiences cannot be compared to what forestry professionals have studied and practiced for many years. In forestry it is impossible to fix the mistakes made in the past years during the next one, as the business cycle lasts for a whole generation.

What should be remembered, when the forest owner plans to cut the forest himself:

  • he should have at least elementary knowledge about forestry,
  • he should be familiar with the Forest Act and with related legislation,
  • he should know the complex measurement methods of forest and timber,
  • he should be well aware of the specifics of the timber market (to whom, what, where and when to sell),
  • the economics of forest management has low efficiency, as most of the forest owners in Estonia have small forest properties,
  • all the risks connected with organizing the logging will be covered by the owner.
